Vicki Fleming was named Volunteer of the Year at the 2019 Blind Sport New Zealand Sport Awards in recognition of the amazing contribution she has made to the blind and low-vision sports community. Vicki uses her athletic ability to help support the sporting achievements of blind and low vision athletes as a volunteer guide in Auckland and the Waikato.
The 2021 Adaptive Snow Sports Festival
A few weeks ago, the Blind Sport NZ team flew down to Queenstown to attend the 2021 Adaptive Snow Sports Festival. Over 60 athletes, family members, and volunteers traveled from across the country to attend, making this the biggest turnout for the festival yet. Amongst this group were six vision-impaired participants.
Athlete Spotlight: Sara Ash
Vision impaired athlete Sara Ash’s motto is “never say never”. Currently in her fifties, Sara has recently discovered a real passion for sport, choosing to get involved in some of the many sport and active recreation opportunities available to her as a member of the blind and low vision community. We chatted to Sara about what motivated her to get involved in new sports, what she's loving most about training and competing, her volunteer experience, and her long-term goals.
