NZ squad announced for world’s first Blind Rugby international tests
The first ever New Zealand Blind Rugby team has been named to face the touring Blind Lions on Thursday 6 July at QBE Stadium in the world’s first Blind Rugby international test match.
Blind Rugby is a new sport that makes New Zealand’s national game accessible to the blind and low vision community. The New Zealand national team, proudly supported by the Blind Foundation, will pioneer the adapted seven-a-side format of New Zealand’s national sport in a three fixture test series against the touring Blind Lions in Auckland. In another first, the series will debut the world’s only inflatable full-size rugby posts, produced by New Zealand company Packaworld.
The New Zealand Blind Rugby national team selectors have selected an eight-strong squad for the series.
New Zealand Blind Rugby Squad:
DUNN, Deacan (Auckland).
DUNN, James (captain, Auckland).
FELLOWS, Ben (Hamilton).
HEBERLEY, Cory (Wellington).
HOWELL, Scott (Taupo).
MCCASKILL, Marquele (Auckland).
SHEPHERD, Dan (Auckland).
TE MOMO, Ivan (Gisborne).
Team Manager Donna McCaskill.
Team Physio Mersha Shepherd.
James Dunn will add the New Zealand Blind Rugby team captaincy to his resume of captaincy credentials, currently also wearing the captain’s armband for the New Zealand Blind Cricket team, the NZ BlindCaps. His son Deacan and BlindCaps teammates Fellows and McCaskill will all take the field as newly capped dual internationals.
The rest of the squad will make their New Zealand representative debuts, as international Blind Rugby launches on the world stage.
The Change Foundation (UK) and Blind Sport New Zealand will officially launch Blind Rugby in Auckland on Wednesday, 5 July 2017 ahead of the three fixture test series.
